Name Our Cows - Can You Help?
Anna will receive sufficient funds for three cows. However, President Colin does not know what names to give to these cows.

Rock of Ages
It’s the tail end of the big, bad 1980s in Hollywood, and the party has been raging hard. Aqua Net, Lycra, lace and liquor flow freely at one of the Sunset Strips last legendary venues, a place where sex machine Stacee Jaxx takes the stage and scantily clad groupies line up to turn their fantasies into reality.
Amidst the madness, aspiring rock star (and resident toilet cleaner) Drew longs to take the stage as the next big thing (and longs for small-town girl Sherri, fresh off the bus from Kansas with stars in her eyes). But the rock and roll fairy-tale is about to end when German developers sweep into town with plans to turn the fabled Strip into just another capitalist strip mall.
Can Drew, Sherri and the gang save the strip–and themselves–before it's too late? Only the music of hit bands Styx, Journey, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake and more hold the answer.

District Presidents Meeting
It was a great pleasure to hand on to our Bulletin editor Keith, the award the club received for best bulletin in the District. Keith has done a fabulous job developing the club’s on-line bulletin and this award is thoroughly deserved. Please join me in congratulating Keith.
Other District awards:
PCYC – Opening of Youth Hub last Sunday. A prime example of Clubs working together and partnering with the community which is the future of Rotary. RT Hub was an initiative of the Rotary Club of Wahroonga. The $40,000 total cost was to be funded by Rotary Club of Wahroonga through partnerships and community grants. The Stronger Community Fund from Federal seat of Bradfield (Paul Fletcher) donated ~ $20,000. The Bendigo Bank (Turramurra & Linfield Branches) gave $4,000. The rest came from the Rotary Clubs of Wahroonga, Carlingford, Turramurra, Ku-ring-gai, St Ives, West Pennant Hills & Cherrybrook, Berowra, and Lindfield.
Wahroonga is very committed to Hornsby PCYC. It has donated a total of ~ $116,000 over a number of years and gives $5000 per year to assist the Police Officers working on site.
Donations to the Rotary Foundation: Our Club and members have donated ~ $22,000. This includes $2000 for PolioPlus and $2000 for Australian Rotary Health. Only Beecroft has donated more (~$46,000). The Rotary Annual Fund transforms our donations ($20,000) into service projects that change lives, both close to home, and around the world. During the past 100 years, the Foundation has spent $3 billion on life-changing, sustainable projects.
Since 2013 the Gates Foundation has turned every $ we donate to PolioPlus into $3. Wild Polio cases Year to date are 7 in Afghanistan and 1 in Pakistan. There were 22 cases in 2017, 14 in Afghanistan and 8 in Pakistan. The Eradication program started in 1988. Farewell to Barry
It is with great sadness that we say farewell to Barry at the end of this Rotary Year. Tonight has been chosen for his formal farewell as it is the last suitable partners night before Changeover.
I will provide an insight into Barry’s time with this club then Jim and Ross will share some thoughts about Barry.
Barry joined in 1996 (22 years ago). He has served on the Board many times variously as Director for Fundraising, membership, vocation, and international. He has been sergeant-at arms-twice.
More importantly he is the first member to do 2 full terms as President. His first term was 2004-5 and the second 2014-15.

Night Report - Monday, 28 May, 2018
Opening: Sgt Ric opened the meeting
President Col’s Report
Welcome to Pride of Workmanship participants, partners and visitors. Our club was the 2nd highest for donations to the Foundation. Bill Gates does a great deal for the Foundation and so far they have utilised over $3 billion on various projects and polio.
Well done Keith, for being awarded for the Club’s best produced Bulletin.
Director’s Reports were limited due to the 4 speakers for the Pride of Workmanship
Ross advised the Club will be doing a Friday night in July (TBA) at the Ronald McDonald House, which has now been extended to 60 bedrooms, so there would be approximately 200-300 meals required, so would need approximately 15 people, but the format has changed.
Larissa, was short and sweet, mentioning she had a great safari, visiting Melbourne, Adelaide, Copper Pedy, Cairns and the Gold Coast. She has also changed homes from the Tchetchenian’s to the Loves.
Guest Speaker – Barry Freeman the Host for the Pride of Workmanship which he stated, he just loves this night. Pennant Hill club actually instigated the ‘Pride of Workmanship’ programme to recognise people who took pride in their work.
1. Peter Watts... the Ground keeper at Muirfield Golf Club, Nominated by Tony Coote
Peter is employed by Muirfield Golf Club as the Golf Course Superintendent (Head Greenkeeper) and he commenced his green-keeping apprenticeship at Pymble Golf Club in the late 70’s. The following 40 years included stints at Gleneagles Golf Courses in Scotland, Cromer Golf Club construction and ultimately the maintenance of Terry Hills Golf Club.
He has now been the head greenkeeper of Muirfield for about 10years, and during that time the course has undergone major improvement in the condition of greens, bunkers, fairways and surrounding landscaping.
Peter has led many projects to improve the playing conditions, drainage, water usage and ecology of the course. Last year under Peter’s stewardship, Muirfield Golf Club won a NSW State Award for Sustainability with funding for the regeneration of a remnant Ironbark and Turpentine forest along the 13th and 14th fairways. Muirfield has also recently won the National Claude Crochford Environment Award from the Turf Industry for Environmental Stewardship.
Peter leads his team of green staff and volunteers by example, and is regularly seen on the course on the tractor or on the tools getting the job done. He is friendly and always approachable and has an amazing knowledge of his chosen area of expertise.
2. Grant Patterson. Project builder, Patterson Built Builders.....Nominated by Ricardo Raad
Grant and his family have just produced a great video to market his Company show how he cares for his clients, listens to their needs and has a very strong attitude ‘not to cut corners’.
Grant has been in the building game for over 20 years and has truly had a phenomenal career with some spectacular builds, renovations and fitouts to put to the Patterson Built brand.
Grant’s attention to finer detail and want for prestige finishing came from two of his biggest mentors; his father Ray Patterson and Steve Bridge whom he did his apprenticeship with. Both of these men instilled in him the importance of taking pride in work no matter how small or large the job and most importantly not to cut corners. Grant has remembered these simple elements throughout his building career which he believes sets him apart from the rest.
Over the years, Grant has taken on many impressive projects but one of the major highlights of his career thus far would be the build of his family home at Sackville North. The family home stands today as one of the most impressive residential structures in the Hawkesbury region. The detail is second to none when you walk through the Australian Red Gum, hand crafted double timber doors down into the main living space where you are greeted with impressive 11.2m ceiling heights, a sandstone fireplace which was quarried by the Patterson family from the property. The features and character of this unique home are simply stunning.
Grant established Patterson Built to truly make a name for himself offering prestige finishes on your visions, as today’s market has a serious lack of quality finishes and the use of substandard materials. The team at Patterson Built offer a more personalised approach with each client, focusing on old fashioned customer service and making the client feel like a part of the team with direct and frequent communication. Grant and his team offer quality workmanship and reliable project management for your peace-of-mind.
3. Joseph Touma... builder - Nominated by Ricardo Raad
A shy older gentleman from the ‘old school’ builders whose ethics were to work hard, do the job right and you will prosper. Even though he has had many trials and tribulations he has stuck by his principles. He has contracts to Government in South Sydney for Sports facilities for hand troughs which he as built better and more economically.
4. Kyle Thompson the butcher..... nominated by Steve
Kyle works for Steve’s Fine Meats, the butcher shop in Carmen Drive, Carlingford and is currently doing an apprenticeship which he is in his 2nd year. Steves Fine Meats pride ourselves on our high quality and exceptional service, so Kyle is learning from the best to maintain high skills within his profession. He is enjoying his work and doing very well.
General Business – Barry Freeman’s Farewell
See President Colin’s notes re Barry he forwarded to you.
In reply Ross Ballinger & Jim Simpson, mirrored President Colin’s emotions and the loss to the Club with Barry’s departure, but it would be a gain for one of the Central Coast clubs. We hope to see Barry at the Club for special functions and we all wish him well.

This Week's Humour
An Islamic Miracle
TRUE STORY
SPECIALLY FOR YOU UNBELIEVERS AND CYNICS!! The other day a local mosque opened its doors and invited non-Muslims to visit in the spirit of their faith's willingness to be open and welcoming, so I too decided to go to the local mosque in Lakemba for the first time to see what it was all about: Lakemba has a large Muslim population and the Lakemba Mosque is one of Australia's largest. At the time I was limping a little. I sat down and the Imam came up to me, laid his hands on my hand and said: "By the will of Allah and the prophet Mohammed - you will walk today." I told him I wasn't paralysed, I only had a small bunion on my left foot. He came back and laid his hands on me and looking skywards, earnestly repeated his mantra: "By the will of Allah and the prophet Mohammed - you WILL walk today." Once again, I told him there was nothing wrong with me. After prayers I stepped outside, and bugger me, he was right, MY CAR WAS GONE!!! |
