Presidents Report
All things health was on the agenda at last night’s face-to-face Club meeting. Numbers were down due to illness, not surprising for this time of year, but a timely reminder to always ere on the side of caution and stay home to avoid spreading any winter ailments. We also considered traveller health, courtesy of our wonderful guest speaker, pharmacist Susan Nguyen from Carmen Drive Community Pharmacy in West Pennant Hills. Not only did Susan update us on current vaccination protocols, she also provided practical advice on how to prepare for international travel, as well as providing a take home gift for all by way of an essential items travel kit.
This travel advice was useful for all of us, none more so than potential outbound Rotary Youth Exchange student, Georgia. Georgia has attended a previous Club meeting, but she attended this week with her parents, Nicole and Todd, to talk more about our sponsorship of her application to the District’s 2024 RYE program, which will be considered and assessed this coming weekend. We wish Georgia well in the selection process and hope to continue this relationship with her and her family.
In return for Susan’s time and generosity in being our guest speaker, we started an initiative last night that ties in closely to the Club’s commitment to supporting the environment, the seventh area of Rotary focus. From tonight onwards, the Club will be planting a tree on behalf of each guest speaker who addresses a Club meeting. I commend this initiative from our current Environmental Officer Anne, and am pleased that President-Elect Neville has agreed to carry this forward into the next Rotary year. It may seem a small step, but it is a very effective way of actioning an increased awareness of, and dedication to, environmental sustainability. If Susan’s reaction to this news is any indication, it is an activity that also has meaning and value for our guest speakers.
Although we are nearing the end of the current Rotary year, it doesn’t mean we’ve started to slow down. Rather, the upcoming week brings the following activities and events that continue to see us as people of action, doing good things for our community:
And that’s the Buzz for this week. Next Monday is a Zoom meeting where Club members who attended the recent International Rotary Convention in Melbourne will be sharing their experiences of this event, as well as playing some key clips from plenary sessions, so a good way to finish off this year and pre-empt the start of yet another big year for our Club.
So, my friends stay safe and well and look out for each other. Janelle

- David and Anne as Environmental Officer will be planting trees at West Pennant Hills Public School.
- Neville and I are off to the Changeover for Rotary Club of Norwest Sunrise on Wednesday night;
- David, Anne, Colin, Neville and I are observing practices and helping out the Rotary Club of Greater Hills with their annual book fair from Wed-Sunday this week;
- On Friday morning Andrew is guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Norwest Sunrise breakfast meeting where along with Pam Cain from the Rotary Club of Blacktown they will be talking about the Teacher in a Box program;
- At this same meeting, Colin Sharpe and I will be attending to hand over 50 packs of blankets, socks, scarves, beanies and gloves to President Azita’s charity ‘Shining Light’ who provide support to homeless people in Sydney. Special note is that these goods were sourced from Goods Rescued and Rehomed – so lovely collaboration between us and a number of organisations
- All day Friday and Saturday sees us supporting Pennant Hills High School in the preparation and operation of the BBQ for their annual fete on Saturday 24 June;
- And to close off the week, I will be assisting the District RYEP in conducting interviews for 2024 outbound students.
And that’s the Buzz for this week. Leioproctus Bees
The Leioproctus Bees are a very large and varied group of native bees from the family Colletidae, found right across Australia. With around 200 described species, these furry bees range in size from 4 to 16 mm. Most are black, but some have an abdomen that is orange-red, or metallic blue, green, gold or red.
Each female digs a nest burrow in the ground and the entrance of the burrow is often surrounded by a conical mound of loose soil particles. A large number of Leioproctus nests may be found in the one area. Some of the larger species may build nest tunnels that are nearly 2 m deep!

Tree Planting at West Pennant Hills Public School
Trees are planted as part of our new Environmental initiative to plant a tree on behalf of your weekly guest speakers. This one was planted in honour of Susan Nguyen from Carmen Drive Pharmacy who was the guest speaker at our meeting on Monday 19/06/2023, speaking to us about traveller health. This initiative aims to green our community as well as linking in community groups and organisations - so a great collaborative project.

Senior Wedding... contributed by Cawas
Jacob, age 92, and Rebecca, age 89, living in Miami, are all excited about their decision to get married. They go for a stroll to discuss the wedding, and on the way, they pass a drugstore.
Jacob suggests they go in.
Jacob addresses the man behind the counter: "Are you the owner?"
The pharmacist answers, "Yes."
Jacob: "We're about to get married. Do you sell heart medication?"
Pharmacist: "Of course, we do."
Jacob: "How about medicine for circulation?"
Pharmacist: "All kinds."
Jacob: "Medicine for rheumatism?"
Pharmacist: "Definitely."
Jacob: "How about suppositories?"
Pharmacist: "You bet!"
Jacob: "Medicine for memory problems, arthritis and Alzheimer's?"
Pharmacist: "Yes, a large variety. The works."
Jacob: "What about vitamins, sleeping pills, Geritol, antidotes for Parkinson's disease?"
Pharmacist: "Absolutely."
Jacob: "Everything for heartburn and indigestion?"
Pharmacist: "We sure do."
Jacob: "You sell wheelchairs and walkers and canes?"
Pharmacist: "All speeds and sizes."
Jacob: "Adult diapers?"
Pharmacist: "Sure."
Jacob: "We'd like to use this store as our Bridal Registry."
Jacob suggests they go in.

Good Morning Smile ... contributed by Cawas
I once dated a girl who broke up with me because I only have 9 toes. Yes, she was lack-toes intolerant.
I've started telling everyone about the benefits of eating dried grapes. It's all about raisin awareness.
I've started investing in stocks: beef, vegetable, chicken. One day I hope to be a bouillianaire.
If you boil a funny bone, it becomes a laughing stock. Now that's humerus.
I accidentally rubbed ketchup in my eyes. Now I have Heinzsight.
Did you know muffins spelled backwards is what you do when you take them out of the oven?
Scientifically, a raven has 17 primary wing feathers, the big ones at the end of the wing are called pinion feathers. A crow has 16. So, the difference between a raven and a crow is only a matter of a pinion.
I was walking in the jungle and saw a lizard on his hind legs telling jokes. I turned to a local tribal leader and said, "That lizard is really funny!" The leader replied, "That's not a lizard. He's a stand-up chameleon."
I tried to come up with a carpentry pun that woodwork. I thought I nailed it but nobody saw it.
Just spoke with Bill Withers and told him "Ain't No Sunshine" is bad grammar. He said, "I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know."
Singing in the shower is fine until you get soap in your mouth. Then it's a soap opera.
The Black-Eyed Peas can sing us a song but the chick peas can only hummus one.
Then there was the time Fruit of the Loom took Hanes to court... it was a brief case.
How much does a chimney cost? Nothing, it's on the house.
Once upon a time there was a King who was only 12 inches tall. He was a terrible King but he made a great ruler.
Ran out of toilet paper and now using lettuce leaves. Today was just the tip of the iceberg, and tomorrow romaines to be seen.
My friend Jack says he can communicate with vegetables. That's right...Jack and the beans talk.
I want to tell you about a girl who only eats plants. You probably have not heard of herbivore.
I was struggling to understand how lightning works and then it struck me.
Six cows were smoking joints and playing poker. That's right. The steaks were pretty high.
I went to the paint store to get thinner. It didn't work.
