President's Report

Hi all, on Monday night we had our Youth night which we have twice a year at The Vicar. What a fantastic and full night and we had some 65 people attend. We had current Incoming and Outgoing Exchange students talk about their experience and preparing to leave plus two students who are going to RYPEN in January. We also had ROTEX members who have already completed Exchanges years ago talk about their experience and how they are helping the current Students. We also had a student who we are sponsoring to attend the Engineering Summer School and is very excited about attending. Followed by a video of two students from Coonabarabran High School who we sponsored to attend the Science Experience at Macquarie Uni. They had made a video which we played. All in all a great night and the Youth made us proud. Thank you also to all the parents and carers who escorted the youth to the event and thanks to Cawas for organising the night.
We also had Bob K who came and gave us an update on the upcoming District 9685 Conference (Good Vibrations) to be held at Terrigal on the 15-15 March 2023. It is a Beach Theme this year.

Georgia Ryman our outgoing student in January 24 to Chile, ran through the very thorough process a young person goes through in the year preceding their departure to live overseas in a country where they don’t speak the language, nor know the family’s they will be staying with ... and how to deal with the emotions of a 16 year old in such a situation.
We also heard from Chloe Brennan the new CEO, Melanie and Greg from Rotex, which is the support group around students whilst away in another country, a fantastic organisation supporting students here or where ever they are in the world.

Director’s Reports
- Community Service: Colin Sharpe spoke of…
- Cherrybrook Public School fete where our club had a Santa stand where parents were invited to come forward and be photographed with their kids, Santa and his Elf helper, at the same time encouraged to take Baubles from the Christmas Tree to purchase gifts for under privileged kids via our usual Tree of Joy in Cherrybrook and Westleigh shopping centre’s … it was agreed the Santa photo’s were a great community project… and would be repeated at our own Christmas Fair on 3rd December.
- Colin asked for volunteers for the Uniting Church BBQ coming up soon.
- Colin mentioned the Kris Kringle night on Monday 27th, usually on this night each year members bring along a small gift to be handed out by Santa… However this year it has been decided to ask members to bring along non-perishable food items which would be then donated to Hands & Feet who provide for those less fortunate. BNI Prime (a business networking group several of our members belong too) are also donating to this cause..
- The Tree of Joy…. Colin noted that Baubles were being taken more slowly this year than in previous years, in a year when the need is greatest of all.
- Foundation: David Turnbull encouraged all members to become Centurions, the funds which are used to fund such International projects as End Polio… This fund has already reduced the number of known cases in the world to a very very low number. A movie night in Castle Towers shortly proceeds to the Fund.
- Fund Raising: Janelle Craig ran through the arrangements for the Christmas Fair on 3rd December, 9am until 3pm and called on volunteers from Member and Friends of Rotary to assist with this project. The Tree of Joy with Baubles for interested visitors would be available, along with representatives to also to speak to anyone who might be interested in joining our club. 30 stalls are booking in 27 paying and 3 of our own, eg Cakes for one.
Janelle also spoke of the Domestic Violence gathering in Arthur Whiting Park on Friday night 24th November.
- Public Image… Keith Ball reminded all of us to send photo’s to the bulletin editor as an attachment, not within an email.
- Membership/ Social: Carol Russell welcomed along Sarah Raad who was visiting our club to gauge whether membership is something she would like to engage in, we would love to have you join us Sarah.

Church Squirrels ... contributed by Tony C
After a particularly mild winter, the small town of Chestermere became infected with squirrels in the spring. Because the local churches had the best trees, the squirrels often congregated (pun intended) near them and this is what each church decided to do about the pesky animals...
The Presbyterian church called a meeting to decide what to do about their squirrel infestation. After much prayer and consideration they concluded that the squirrels were predestined to be there and they shouldn’t interfere with God’s divine will. At the Baptist church the squirrels had taken an interest in the baptistery. The deacons met and decided to put a water-slide on the baptistery and let the squirrels drown themselves. The squirrels liked the slide and, unfortunately, knew instinctively how to swim, so twice as many squirrels showed up the following week. The Lutheran church decided that they were not able to harm any of God’s creatures. So they humanely trapped their squirrels and set them free near the Baptist church. Two weeks later the squirrels were back when the Baptists took down the water-slide. The Episcopalians tried a much more unique path by setting out pans of whiskey around their church to kill the squirrels with alcohol poisoning. Sadly, they learned how much damage a band of drunk squirrels can do. The Catholic church came up with a very creative strategy! They baptized all the squirrels and made them members of the church. Now they see them only at Christmas and Easter. Not much was heard from the Jewish synagogue. They took the first squirrel and circumcised him. They haven’t seen a squirrel since. |
