President Elect's Report
Hi All, well our first official night at The Vicar and we had some 45 guests, partners and members attend. What was really good to see was guests and members who had decided at the last moment to come or not to come but having the flexibility was fantastic. As it was our first night we had a couple hiccups but we will iron them out and overall it was a good and very full night.
Now we are at The Vicar we will redo our duties for each of our roles on the night.
It was really good to celebrate Iisa birthday and thank you to Anne for the birthday day cake and Janelle and other members for organising the presents.
Thank you to our guest speaker Brooke Collins for his very interesting speech and another perspective on defibrillators.
Updates from past week:
That’s it for the week so Let’s look after each other, stay safe and let’s do it.
Remember to check “What’s On” for what’s on.
Attached is the list of events for August, another busy month.

Updates from past week:
- We lost one of our past Rotarians, Colin Wright a last couple of weeks ago. Firstly I would like to recognise Colin’s contribution to the Club and I would like to thank everyone who attended the Service.
- International Student Commitment. Please remember this is a commitment by the Club. We all need to get involved and help the Host families. If you are going somewhere pls ask the Host Family if you can take Iisa. Multiple benefits, Good for you, good for Iisa, respite for the Host family
- Rotary Leadership Institute Courses (RLI): RLI is a training course offered to Rotarians to develop their skills in leadership and management within Clubs to improve performance, knowledge and enjoyment in leading or helping to lead Clubs in the District. The next course, currently open for registrations is 27-28-29 Oct 2023. Run via Zoom and starts on Friday night. Anne completed the course on 11-13 Aug and was very impressed and will talk about it more at our next meeting. Future dates are: 23-24-25 Feb 2024, 17-18-19 May 2024.
- Ride the Train to END POLIO – The date has now been set for Ride the Train to End Polio, which is Tuesday 24th October. On World Polio Day, 24 October, Dave and Mark Anderson will be on the Sydney Train network as they have done for the past five years stopping at every train station in Sydney to raise money for End Polio. They have raised some $550,000 over the last 5 years. Yes our Club will be contributing.
- Cluster Meetings: On Thursday 7 Sep met with Stuart Armstrong AG and five other Presidents from the Hills district. Agenda was: Regionalisation and Domestic and Family Violence. Also, on Friday 8th Sep met with Mercedes Durante AG and three other Presidents with similar agenda.
- Regionalisation – Club Presidents and Secretaries will shortly receive an email inviting the Clubs to specify how they would like to be grouped with other clubs in the new structure. This could be by LGA, City & Country, Interest Groups etc.
- Membership Establishment Team: One of the main priorities as part of the Zone 8 Regionalisation Pilot is to increase membership in our region. To do this, a key focus for the Membership Establishment Team has been identifying areas of need including ‘new club development’ as a top priority. New club development is an essential part of growing Rotary, along with attracting and retaining members in our existing clubs. New style clubs, in particular, are essential for reaching new demographics that our traditional clubs may be unable to attract and retain. A new club development team has been established led by Tony Heyward from New Zealand and Andy Rajapakse from Australia. Their team is composed of 10 members from different districts, who have a wealth of ‘hands on’ experience in this area and the team’s goal is to start 20 new clubs in Zone 8 this Rotary year.
- Rotary Disaster Relief: District 9685 has established the Rotary Disaster Relief (RDR) team, as a response to the fires and floods in Australia over recent years, coming in during the debilitating and ongoing effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic. The Teams mission is: Our Mission is to respond to disasters by meeting those affected and working with them in identifying “what do you need”? This Team has invited me to join, and I have accepted.
- Maui Wild Fire Disaster – RAWCS have set up a disaster relief fund to provide funds for humanitarian programs to assist the people and communities affected by the catastrophic wildfires on Maui, Hawaii. Full details in the Bulletin.

That’s it for the week so Let’s look after each other, stay safe and let’s do it.

Guest Speaker
Brooke Nelson from Rotaid gave a presentation on cardiac defibrillators. Brooke took the need for cardiac defibrillators for granted. His talk concentrated on the need for installed defibrillators to exist and work, have consumable items replaced on schedule. Many defibrillators do not work because they are locked in a cupboard and rarely, if ever serviced, so batteries go flat and pads that are placed on patients have aged beyond “best before’ times.
Brooke indicated that Rotaid has methodically addressed various aspects of concern with defibrillator usage and dramatically increased availability of use.
Anne Sharpe oversaw a series of questions from members. She then thanked Brooke on behalf of the Club.
Sergeant at Arm’s
President Neville conducted the Heads and Tails which was won by Adrian.
Raffle won by: Dr. Len Smith.

Car Keys... contributed by Cawas
As I left the hardware store the other day, I was fumbling for my car keys and could not find them. They weren't in my pockets. Suddenly I realized I must have left them in the car. Frantically, I headed for the parking lot. My wife has scolded me many times for leaving my keys in the car's ignition. She's afraid that the car could be stolen. As I looked around the parking lot, I realized she was right.
The parking lot was empty. I immediately called the police. I gave them my location, confessed that I had left my keys in the car and that it had been stolen.
Then I made the most difficult call of all to my wife: "I left my keys in the car and it's been stolen."
There was a moment of silence. I thought the call had been
disconnected, but then I heard her voice. "Are you kidding me?" she barked, "I dropped you off!"
Now it was my turn to be silent. Embarrassed, I said, "Well, come and get me then."
She retorted, "I will, as soon as I convince this cop that I didn't steal your d@#n car!"
