President's Report
Hi all,
Well this was our first meeting at the Vicar for two weeks due to Easter. We had some 40 people attend.
Tonight, Rob Clarke walked us through their trip to Jerusalem in 2023. A very interesting presentation and a very religious part of the world. Thank you Rob!
So, looking forward:

So, looking forward:
- The Lions Club of West Pennant Hills & Cherrybrook, ANZAC Commemoration Dinner will be held on Monday 22 April at the West Pennant Hills Sports Club. Can you pls let Ros Hogan know if you are attending by Sunday 14 April, and place $55 into the General Account. We will let them know on Monday 15 April how many are attending.
- We have our Mother’s Day Market coming up on Sunday 5th May and Janelle gave us an update.
- Norwest Sunrise Trivia Night will be held on Saturday 4th May starting at 6:30pm at the Wesley Uniting Church, Castle Hill. We would like to book a table. Can you pls let Janelle know if you would like to attend.
- Please remember District Assembly for all incoming Board members is on 4 May 2024, and the Venue will be the Western Sydney University, Second Avenue, Kingswood. If you are on the incoming Board, you should have received an invite.
- Friendship Dinners – Anne has asked for people who would like to attend. These are very good nights and a very good way to get to know other members and partners. We normally have 3 to 4 hosts and then participants are allocated to these hosts and dinner is arranged. Janelle had hers on Friday night, a very good night.
- Response from Hornsby Council, but very disappointing. We have sold the two shipping containers at Galston for $3,000 each and Galston Hills Storage have offered us a 20 ft Shipping Container at zero cost for the next 4 months so will take this up and still keep looking for options. Working Bee on Friday 12 April to empty the containers. The buyer of the containers has offered two employees to help expedite the release of the containers. Need all hands.
- International Student Commitment. Please remember this is a commitment by the Club. We all need to get involved and help the Host families. If you are going somewhere pls ask the Host Family if you can take Iisa. For example, the Footy on Friday night or something you like to do i.e. go out for dinner. Multiple benefits, Good for you, good for Iisa, respite for the Host family
- Rotary Leadership Institute Courses (RLI): RLI is a training course offered to Rotarians to develop their skills in leadership and management within Clubs to improve performance, knowledge and enjoyment in leading or helping to lead Clubs in the District. The next course is on 17-18-19 May 2024. Run via Zoom and starts on Friday night. Full details in the District Newsletter.
- Board Meeting:
- The Board approved Youth Exchange Student for next year on the condition we can get enough Host families. We now have three Host families and are after another one. Happy for you to contact me while Cawas is away.
- The Board has approved Honorary Membership for Jim Simpson and Max Henderson. These will be presented on Monday 15 April.
- Regionalisation: District 9685 was allocated 5 (five) Regional Community Groups (RCGs) that in general fitted quite well with our existing clusters.
- Nominations for the Regional Community Leader were then called and are now closed.
- Currently have two Candidates, the Board will discuss on Wednesday night and make a submission as the Club has one vote.
- Bass Bhaskaran, Carlingford RC
- Russell Zimmerman, Beecroft RC
- Hands and Feet – are still looking for Volunteer divers. If you are interested please contact me.
- Centurions: It would be very nice to have all members as Centurions. This is achieved by placing $100 in our General Account and letting Bob know. We currently have approx. ¼ of the Club as Centurions and we have three months to go. Please talk to David. Thanks everyone.
That’s it for the week so let’s look after each other, stay safe and let’s do it.
Remember to check “What’s On” for what’s on. Yours in Rotary, Neville Hansen |

Guest Speaker
Guest speaker Rob Clarke was introduced by Lucy. Although featured on the poster, Rosemary remained quiet (unusual!).
Rob gave an amazingly well researched summary of Israel and Jerusalem in particular. A few details are:
- Israel is only 422 km long and 10 to 114 km wide so would fit into a corner of New South Wales. The Gaza strip is tiny – 40 x 10 km – and would fit into Greater Sydney.
- There are 10 Mil people in Israel, 2.5m in the West Bank and 2.2m in Gaza.
- Israel has been important for centuries since it is in the middle of trade routes.
- Bob described three main locations in Jerusalem: The Wailing Wall (the only remaining part of King Soloman’s Temple), the location of the Crucifixion and tomb of Jesus and an area set aside for Muslims related to the Prophet Mohammad which is inaccessible except to Muslims.
- Bethlehem is in the West Bank area which is divided into three zones (Israel has total control of 60% but Area A (quite small) is fully controlled by the Palestinians).
- Finally Bob and Rosemary visited the Golan Heights and the Jordan River, where John the Baptist baptised his followers.
The Raffle was drawn by Bernhard and won by Carol.
Heads and Tails was won by Alex.
Meeting closed at 9.15 pm by Neville.

* I've started telling everyone about the benefits of eating dried grapes. It's all about raisin awareness.
* I've started investing in stocks: beef, vegetable, chicken. One day I hope to be a bouillianaire.
