Presidents Report
Greetings all. I hope this bulletin edition finds you well and enjoying a week free from a formal Club meeting. You may remember, this occurred because of our attendance last Friday night at the 50th anniversary of the Rotary Club of Carlingford. Around 100 people attended the celebrations including DG Mina and other clubs in our District cluster such as Epping and North Rocks. Channel 9’s crime editor, Simon Bouda was the guest speaker and provided a fascinating insight into the life of a foreign correspondent and crime reporter. In addition, some of our club members won prizes in the raffle and wine competition, plus had a lot of fun dancing the night away! Well done President Trudy and Carlingford Rotary on 50 amazing years of service to the local community, and for being a club we’re always happy to work with.
The next two weeks are again busy with Club events and activities. These include:
I wanted to make special mention of the Donors trip to Flores and wish those travelling from our Club - Peter and Julianne, Andrew and Desley, Tony M and John T, a safe and productive trip. This trip is jam packed with activities including meeting with the Rotary Club of Bali Seminyak to focus on developing a memorandum of understanding and working on agreements to support a Global Grant with NTA. Furthermore, the group will be taking with them 10 ex-company laptops which have been gratefully received from Boehringer Ingelheim. These have been checked over by Andrew and will be transported with the group. They will be used for educational purposes, in particular to support the initiative “Teacher in a Box”, which is a website offering a vast and diverse array of free educational materials from use in subjects from primary school through to university.
So, a very exciting time ahead for our intrepid travellers. I wanted to thank and pay special tribute to Peter for his drive in leading this trip, for doing so much work behind the scenes to bring it to fruition and for his passionate support of NTA.
Lastly it is with sadness that we learnt on Monday of the passing of Charter Member and Past President, Howard Fleming. In recent years Howard was made an Honorary Member and has been off travelling far and wide with Megan in his beloved Winnebago. I’ve accessed the Club’s 30th Anniversary booklet and Howard’s summation of his Presidential Year 1988-89, as it serves to demonstrate the foundations he helped to lay for our Club, and his ongoing commitment to the Club and regard for the values of Rotary.
We concentrated on establishing the Club's reputation in the community. The year saw the introduction of the Club's involvement in Christmas tree sales and the introduction of the "Friendship" dinners, where small parties of members and their wives ventured into each other’s homes for fellowship. Also, the improvement of the children's playing facilities at the Edward Bennett Drive park, and provided books for presentation nights to four local schools.
Our fundraising activities relied heavily upon what are becoming traditions of the Club - the Plant Sale and Burning Log night out. Our attendance averaged some 82.33% and this compares favourably with district average of 75.46%. The club this year met its target of 100% members, Life Membership of this Division of Rotary International.
Polio Plus - Funds raised exceeded the budget set by District.
Our second outward bound student went to Dauphin, Canada. We conducted a meeting at the Life Education Centre at Colyton. The interest created amongst the members was such that the Club donated $1000 to the Baulkham Hills Life Education Mobile Centre. It is to be hoped that our Club will provide ongoing support for the youth in the Hills District. The Club bestowed a Paul Harris fellowship on the Club's Charter President, Trevor Turner.

Arcadia to Ingleside
On Saturday, Janelle and Neville picked up a large load (car plus trailer) of toys, from Goods Rescued and Rehomed” (Michele’s) and delivered these to “Terry the Toy Man” at Ingleside. Terry has some 30 volunteers who sort, wash, and repair these toys, and then donate them to charities. What a great community service. There is a large demand for these toys as Christmas approaches.
