Presidents Report
There are some meetings when the stars align and things pull together for a fantastic night, and I believe what we experienced tonight was one of them. For the first time we held a Sponsors and Donors Night which aimed to recognise the relationship our Club has with its sponsors and to allow them to gain insights into the way the club functions and the organisations it supports through its fundraising and community services portfolios. Equally, the night served to highlight the charities and causes the Club supports and to provide an opportunity to hand over dedicated funds raised throughout the year.
To this end we welcomed representatives from organisations we will be donating funds to this Rotary year (who have not had funds dispersed to date) namely:
And from our sponsors, we welcomed:
With a cast of thousands in attendance and lots going on in the meeting, it was also a good time to focus on membership, and so we welcomed visitors: Sandra, Sam and Scott who attended to get a feel of the Club and what we do. Importantly we also welcomed our newest member Robyn as she was formally inducted into the Club at tonight’s meeting. Many thanks go here to our Membership Director Carol who’s working hard to ensure our Club grows in number, diversity and inclusivity.
The week that was:
Also on Sunday, Colin, Neville and I participated in the Rotary Club of Norwest Sunrises’ Community Connect event at Castle Hill Showground. This was a brilliant event to connect the community to local service clubs and organsiations that help and assist residents. Equally it was an amazing opportunity for each of these clubs to connect with each other and that’s exactly what we did - we liaised with Lions, Probus, Men’s and Women’s Sheds, the Country Women’s Association, Positive Vibes, singing groups and orchestras and so many more. Once again, I can’t speak highly enough of this event
And if that wasn’t enough for a Sunday, Neville and I also put in effort to this Sunday’s Mother’s Day Market by potting up plants for the Plant Stall, as well as making a trip to Glenorie Markets to procure more stallholders – and it did the trick- 3 extra stallholders as of midnight that night.
Upcoming events:
And to finish, as I’ve started doing at the end of each month, please see below a summary of all the activities the Club got up to in April 2023 – another big, busy and energetic month:
And that’s the Buzz my friends. Next Monday 08/05/2023 we have our Vocational visit to Bob’s car workshop, followed by a face-to-face meeting on Monday 15/05/2023 where we celebrate our annual Pride of Workmanship Awards ceremony. So, charge your batteries as it’s a busy time for the Club!! Regards Janelle

The week that was:
- Just this past week we been involved in 3 ANZAC Day ceremonies each as moving and inspiring as the next. I reported on this in last week’s bulletin, but please take some time to look at the photo gallery that highlights what went on at the WPH-C Lions ANZAC Commemorative Dinner last Monday night.
- Last Thursday night I attended my final cluster President’s meeting, but at this meeting we invited our President Elect’s to hopefully facilitate communication and networking between clubs as we start to transition to the next Rotary year.
- On Friday and Saturday, Peter and Andrew, together with Stephanie Heighes from NTA, were in Canberra to attend the NTA Annual Dinner, at which Peter was the guest speaker. Peter did himself and the Club proud, and this indeed is a huge honour and recognition of the tremendous work he is doing on behalf of the Club particularly in securing and leading the Rotary Global Grant; in addition, Andrew used the opportunity to publicise ‘Teacher in the Box’ and how the Club is working hard to get this embedded into West Timor.
- On Sunday we prepped for the upcoming Mother’s Day Market by cleaning up the RFS/Girl Girls precinct and making sure everything is in order for this fantastic fundraiser this coming Saturday 6 May – so thanks here to Adrian, Ros H, Colin, David and Neville, and to Anne as the new Environmental Officer for coordinator on this front.
Also on Sunday, Colin, Neville and I participated in the Rotary Club of Norwest Sunrises’ Community Connect event at Castle Hill Showground. This was a brilliant event to connect the community to local service clubs and organsiations that help and assist residents. Upcoming events:
- Tomorrow 02/05/2023 we have more signs going up for the Mother’s Day Market, as well as the Community Service team helping to relocate household goods from a family downsizing in Dural to a refugee family in Dee Why.
- Tomorrow night the Club contingent of 11 members and partners attending the Rotary International Convention in Melbourne at the end of the month will be getting together to plan what we’ll get up to at this very exciting event
- And on Thursday night 04/05, Neville and I will be attending an event that ties in very closely to what we’re working for at the Mother’s Day Market namely domestic violence, as we’ll be present at the Hills Domestic Violence Fundraising Dinner. The NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb will be the guest speaker to help raise awareness of domestic and family violence. It’s not too late to attend so please feel free to join us!
- On Friday 05/05/2023 we’ll be busy preparing for the Mother’s Day Market which takes place the next day, Saturday 06/05/2023 at the RFS/Girl Guides precinct. This event is raising money for the Sanctuary – the Hills Women’s Shelter (which provides a refuge for women and children experiencing domestic violence) and The Hill’s Women’s Shed (which is an initiative of Positive Vibes and provides resources and education and training to help empower women and girls).

Australian Native Bees - Green Carpenter Bees
These spectacular bees (up to 17 mm long) are glossy metallic green with tints of yellow or blue. They cut 7 to 10 mm wide nest burrows in the flower stalks of the grass tree (Xanthorrhoea) or in other soft pithy dead timber. They are mainly found in QLD and NSW. Landclearing has caused the loss of these stunning bees from VIC and mainland areas of SA although they can still be found on Kangaroo Island in SA.

ANZAC Commemeration Dinner
Superb Photography from Lion Geoff Irvine
Hi Janelle and Max,
As promised, a group of photos from last Monday evening’s Anzac Commemoration Dinner. I hope I haven’t missed anyone.
I’m not certain if all photos relate to your Club but wearing name badges helped me a lot.
What wonderful speakers we had and a life-or-death story brilliantly told by Captain Heng Khong. A story of desperate survival against incredible odds during those dark days in WW2. It must have been terrifying.
It is the first time we’ve had duo speakers using the question/answer format to entertain the audience. I've had good feedback.
It was a pleasure to welcome your members and share fellowship & fun, after all, we are all brothers & sisters in service and our communities benefit from our various projects.
We are looking forward to supporting your Triva Evening in August. Please send us an invitation in due course.
I’m sending the photos in large format in case some members what to share them with family and friends etc.
I was generally happy with my shoot even though some of the lighting conditions were challenging in that room. Down lights are not my favourite lighting - too many shadows.
Could you please distribute the shots to your members accordingly.
Enjoy and best wishes,
Your’s in Service

Peter - Guest Speaker at NTA Dinner 28/4/23
From: Phil Domaschenz
Subject: Thank you from the NTA
Dear Friends,
Wow – what a great night!!! NTA extends its sincere appreciation to all those that attended and otherwise supported our fund-raising dinner last Friday.
In total we raised an amazing $6500 with 104 guests.
This income is very important for continuing our work with poor farming communities in Eastern Indonesia. This is enough funds, for example, to provide 13 household water tanks.
