Presidents Report
It was great to be back online on Monday night after a well-deserved recharge following a huge weekend on 20-21 August. But it was back to business with gusto! Monday’s zoom meeting was an important one for the club where we focused our energy and efforts on the potential Zone 8 Regionalisation trial. For those absent from the meeting, or for those who may not have accessed the material provided in the Bulletin dated 8 August, the following is a very quick recap about the trial.
Rotary International is considering establishing a regional governance pilot to address membership, public image, communication, and fundraising challenges to ensure our organisation thrives long into the future. Should this proceed, in Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands we have an opportunity to be one of a small number of regions across the globe to pilot this new governance structure, created by RI’s Shaping Rotary’s Future Committee (SRF). If the pilot proceeds, it will occur whilst districts remain in place and in full consultation with districts and clubs. The RI Council on Legislation voted strongly in favour of a pilot being undertaken in Zone 8 on the basis that clubs and districts support this happening by October 2022.
We welcomed Michelle Westlund from the District team on Regionalisation to the meeting to further facilitate our discussions and learnings in this area, and after a healthy debate amongst Club members we proceeded to conduct an online poll to give each member a say in how they want our club to cast its ballot in the upcoming voting process. 22 members cast a vote, with 19 voting YES and 3 voting NO, thus giving an 86% majority vote by the Club in support of the Regionalisation trial. The Club vote (to be undertaken by Club Presidents) is scheduled between 15 – 30 September, so after this time we will be advised of the voting outcome across the entire Zone.
Also on District issues, I wanted to draw your attention to correspondence that came out recently in the last eNEWS from former District Governor David Clark, in his capacity as the National Manager of Rotary Australia Repurposing Equipment (RARE). David raised the issue of the need for a new Manager of the Castle Hill RARE facility. Clubs and members within a half hour radius of the facility are being targeted to see if there is interest from either Clubs and/or individual members to take on this role. District stress that if RARE does not get someone, or a club to take it on as a project, then the facility will close and there would be no way of sending containers out of Sydney or the Southern Region. The RAWCS board are open to any and all ideas to keep this facility open, including job sharing options. While our Club may not be in a position to take on this role, I wanted to make members aware of this opportunity in case they wish to pursue this role themselves. Please see attached the job description. If you are interested, please contact PDG David Clark at [email protected]
And to finish, as I’ve started doing at the end of each month, please see below a summary of all the activities the Club got up to in August 2022 and take a big pat on the back for another-action packed and impactful month that achieved great outcomes:

Letter from David Clark re RARE facility
Dear Presidents
Just in case you do not know Keith Roffey the RARE facility manager at Castle Hill and Janice his Administration manager are both retiring from that position which they have held for now 5 years.
I have sent out the Job Descriptions to clubs before, but I am just letting you know just how urgent and important that these jobs are filled by Christmas of 2022. Keith will stay on to train the people till June 2023 if needed.
If no one comes forward to accept these positions the Rotary Australia Repurposing Equipment (RARE) facility at Castle Hill will have to be closed.
Just to put you all in the picture this Central Region’s Facility alone, last year (even during Covid) sent out 7 x 40ft shipping containers filled to the brim with much needed medical and educational equipment, and another 13 containers filled with approximately 8 million, face masks for COVID 19 safety, out to numerous countries throughout the world. Last year’ value of goods sent would be well over one million dollars.
So, you can see to have to close a fabulous RAWCS Project like this, is very heart breaking.
PLEASE, PLEASE, ask members in your club or maybe ask your board if they might take on the running of this project and administration as a club project. The RAWCS board are open to any and all ideas to keep this facility open, as long as there is one person that is in charge of the project.
Below are the job descriptions for both positions, and if you have any questions just give me a ring and we can organise a tour of the warehouse at Castle Hill

Humour
A Poem to which I can relate ... contributed by Jim
I remember the corned beef of my childhood,
And the bread that we cut with a knife,
When the children helped with the housework,
And the men went to work, not the wife.
The cheese never needed a fridge,
And the bread was so crusty and hot,
The children were seldom unhappy,
And the wife was content with her lot.
I remember the milk from the bottle,
With the yummy cream on the top,
Our dinner came hot from the oven,
And not from a freezer, or shop.
The kids were a lot more contented,
They didn't need money for kicks,
Just a game with their friends in the road,
And sometimes the Saturday flicks.
I remember the shop on the corner,
Where biscuits for pennies were sold,
Do you think I'm a bit too nostalgic?
Or is it....I'm just getting Old?
Bathing was done in a wash tub,
With plenty of rich foamy suds
But the ironing seemed never ending
As Mum pressed everyone's 'duds'.
I remember the slap on my backside,
And the taste of soap if I swore
Anorexia and diets weren't heard of
And we hadn't much choice what we wore.
Do you think that bruised our ego?
Or our initiative was destroyed?
We ate what was put on the table
And I think life was better enjoyed.
