Presidents Report
Last weekend I attended a function where the Rev Bill Crews was talking about his longstanding service to the community through his Foundation and the ‘Loaves and Fishes’ food kitchen he operates in Ashfield. During his talk, he made a comment in relation to community service that made my ears prick up and think of Rotary and our Club. He said: people don’t always remember what you say but they remember what you do.
I think the comment resonated so strongly because just the day before our Club ran the Election Day BBQ and Cake Stall at West Pennant Hills Public School and we saw directly how our actions and deeds as Rotarians impact the community – that is, its what they see us do and the causes we support that leaves a lasting impression.
And it was hard not to see us in action because we were out in force and having enormous fun in the process! The comradery we have as a Club is infectious and to this end this fundraiser, to support the Nusa Tengarra association put clean water and sanitation into West Timor, generated expressions of interest from 7 community members, all keen to learn more about Rotary, and possibly join the Club as members or friends of the Club. In fact one of them, Hilary, attended our Club meeting tonight, and we hope to welcome her again and further extend this relationship.
So well done to everyone who worked to make this event so successful in terms of funds raised, membership and Club health. A special thank you to: Tony C who coordinated the BBQ and his fabulous team of master chefs; all of our amazing bakers who cooked scrumptious baked treats for us to sell; Carol, helped by Michael, who made sure no opportunity was lost to recruit potential members!; David who worked closely with the school in bringing this event to fruition; Neville for coordinating the overall event. And PS: if you’re missing your Rotary apron post the BBQ, I’m holding it – washed, ironed and waiting for you to claim it!
While we helped to nourish the community over the weekend, we in turn had the chance to have our souls nourished tonight by having our guest speaker, Jan-Maree Ball, enlighten us about her charity, ‘Aussie Hero Quilts’. What amazing work is undertaken by Jan-Maree and her band of quilters across Australia make quilts and laundry bags to send to serving members of the Defence Force currently on certain deployments from Dubai and Bahrain to South Sudan, Egypt and Israel as well as some on home soil. Their quilts and laundry bags are gifts to say thank you to the serving member for their service and the sacrifice that service asks of them and their families. They’re sent in response to requests from serving members or their loved ones – spouses, family members and friends, as well as being sent to those in compassionate need or ill health. - Bunnings Castle Hill Market this Thursday night 31/03/2023 – Kerry, Neville Sue and Michael are organising a promotional booth for the Club including an Easter Eggs guessing competition;
- Fundraising BBQ at Bunnings Castle Hill 15/04/2023 – need lots of hands on deck for this one;
- District Assembly on 15/04/2023 – which is designed to acquaint all Club Boards for the incoming Rotary year 2023-24 of District plans, initiatives and officer bearers – so hopefully Directors attending this will go from Assembly to the afternoon shift at the BBQ !!
- Social dinner on 21/04/2023 at Il Posto at North Ryde;
- Anzac Day dinner with WPH&C Lions Club and Rotary Club of Beecroft on Mon 24/04 – so expecting good turn out from our Club members;
- Mother’s Day Market – Cherrybrook RFS precinct on Saturday 06/05/2023;
- Kings Coronation Picnic on Saturday 06/05/2023; being organised by Julian Lesser’s office; Neville and I attended a meeting with his office and other community groups last Friday and made numerous suggestions; unfortunately this event clashes with our Mother’s Day Market but may still have potential be involved by running a promotional booth along the lines of that which we’ll run at Bunnings Castle Hill this Thursday.

Great Carpenter Bees
The 15-24 mm Great Carpenter Bees are the largest bees in Australia! They cut nest burrows in soft timber such as dead limbs of a mango tree.
The Xylocopa Great Carpenter Bees belong to the family Apidae. They are found in northern and eastern areas of Western Australia, Northern Territory, Queensland and New South Wales.

Sgt John T opened the meeting and Lucy-Jade gave the toast to Rotary and funds raised during the last BBQ on election Saturday
President Janelle welcomed all especially our guest speaker Jan-Maree Ball OAM, partners and guests.
Janelle thanked all that assisted with the BBQ and cake stall both were great success. Was also great for membership recruitment and club bonding.
President Janelle also spoke about the recent District Conference and upcoming events.
Sgt John T then invited Edwina to present the Immunity Wooden Spoon, which was graciously received by David Turnbull who had to recite the Rules of Engagement (see attached)

Alex Jugueta, introduced Jan-Maree Ball OAM as our guest speaker.
Jan-Maree is the CEO and founder of Aussie Hero Quilts and laundry bags. She started in late 2011 by sending quilts to one particular solder and his team. With the help of her quilt group she set up the organization in January 2012 to supply quilts to ADF personnel serving overseas and later included personalized laundry bags.
Since inception, 15,000 quilts and 33,000 laundry bags have been donated to serving and returned ADF personnel. The Quilts and bags have been sent to The United Arab Emeriters, Iraq, Sinai Egypt, South Sudan and Afghanistan.
In conclusion, Alex thanked Jan-Maree for her presentation
Sgt Joh T conducted a lively fine session, drawn raffle (won by Max) and Head-and Tails (won by one Cawas)

- Edwina (Community): received two nominations for Pride in Workmanship, looking for more. A vocational visit is being organized at Bob Whyms workshop.
- Carol (Membership): A number of potential new members are in the pipeline.
- Peter (International): Spoke about the availability and use of district grants.
- David (Foundation): encouraged members to become Centurions by donating a minimum of AU$100. He explained the role of the Rotary Foundation.
- Neville (Club Service): Club program is UTD. Bob Davison is looking after attendance for Face to Face meetings in Ros Hogan’s absence.
- Tony C (Treasurer): Advised that $1853.00 profit after expenses was raised from the Election Day BBQ. The cake stall raised over $900.00. He thanked David Turnbull for his assistance in co-ordinating with the school. Tony also mentioned the dinner on the 21st April. So far 13 booked for a maximum of 30
- John C (fundraising): spoke about the upcoming Mother’s day market. So far, we have seven stall registrations. Will be calling on members for a working bee to prepare the site prior to market day.

"Mrs. Smith, do you realize these are birth control pills?"
"Yes, they help me sleep at night."
"Mrs. Smith, I assure you there is absolutely nothing in these that could possibly help you sleep!"
She reached out and patted the young doctor's knee and said, "Yes, dear, I know that. But every morning, I grind one up and mix it in the glass of orange juice that my 16-year-old Granddaughter drinks. And believe me it definitely helps me sleep at night."

Students in an advanced Biology class were taking their mid-term exam. The last question was, 'Name seven advantages of Mother's Milk.' The question was worth 70 points or none at all. One student was hard put to think of seven advantages He wrote:
1) It is perfect formula for the child.
2) It provides immunity against several diseases.
3) It is always the right temperature.
4) It is inexpensive.
5) It bonds the child to mother and vice versa.
6) It is always available as needed
And then the student was stuck. Finally, in desperation, just before the bell rang indicating the end of the test he wrote:
7) It comes in two attractive containers and it's high enough off the ground where the cat can't get it.
He got an A+.
A woman and her 12-year-old son were riding in a taxi in Detroit . It was raining and all the prostitutes were standing under awnings.
"Mom," said the boy, "what are all those women doing?"
"They're waiting for their husbands to get off work," she replied
The taxi driver turns around and says, "Geez lady, why don't you tell him the truth? They're hookers, boy! They have sex with men for money."
The little boy's eyes get wide and he says, "Is that true Mom?"
His mother, glaring hard at the driver, answers "Yes."
After a few minutes the kid asks, "Mom, if those women have babies, what happens to them?"

An elderly, but hardy cattleman from Texas once told a young female neighbor that if she wanted to live a long life, the secret was to sprinkle a pinch of gunpowder on her oatmeal each morning. She did this religiously and lived to the ripe old age of 103. She left behind 14 children, 30 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren and a 40 foot HOLE where the crematorium used to be.
