Can you put a "Teacher in a Box"?
Peter Stanton (left) and Andrew Little (2nd from right) from Rotary International's Club West Pennant Hills & Cherrybrook do this regularly. Today, they picked up a trolley of used iPads and notebook computers, which will now get a second life in Indonesia. The volunteers are going to upload ebooks as well as teaching material following the country's national curriculum and distribute them to school children together with a local partner.
When we upgrade our tools at Boehringer Ingelheim, our IT team prepares the used equipment for donation (thanks Ben Ambrose!). This "Green IT" programme is part of our sustainability strategy. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gMvySzbn
And read more about Peter's and Andrew's Rotary Club here: http://www.wphcrotary.org/
And if you want to know the Rotary Club that I'm a member of, take a look here: Rotary Club of Sydney Cove :-)

Our sincere thanks to Dirk and Ben.
We appreciate the generous donation of IT resources from Boehringer Ingelheim,
We are travelling to the remote communities in Flores and West Timor, Indonesia in October. We will deploy these educational resources in schools and the health clinic.
Also we will review our Water and Sanitation projects currently running.
We know this IT equipment and learning packages will make a huge difference for children in these schools.
Thank you. Peter & Andrew.- Rotary.

Hi Keith, can you pls put in the Bulletin. The Club donated $500 to this cause. Regards Neville ...
Good afternoon The members of the Rotary Club of The Entrance wish to thank your club for assisting us with the Allawah House Mattress Project. All seven mattresses and additional linen were delivered to Allawah House before the end of the financial year, and we could not have done this without your help. What a force Rotary is when we pull together! We also acknowledge the assistance of Russell Grove, who brought our need for assistance to the attention of the clubs in our area. We could not have done this without you all! Attached is an article which will be in our next bulletin – please feel free to include it in yours also should you wish. Yours in Rotary Service Julie Glover Treasurer and Bulletin Editor Rotary The Entrance |
Allawah House Mattress Project – Rotary Club of The Entrance Existing services cannot meet the demand for crisis accommodation for women who are homeless. More than 50% of women in Australia who seek a bed in a crisis shelter are turned away every night, mostly due to a lack of space. Women’s Community Shelters works with communities to establish new shelters, which provide short term accommodation and support in a safe environment. This enables homeless women to rebuild self-esteem and achieve control and fulfilment in their lives. Allawah House provides such accommodation that includes a brand new mattress, which the woman is able to take with her when she gets back on her own feet. Hence the need for new mattresses. Allawah House is run by Women’s Community Shelters (WCS) and offer medium term secure accommodation for up to 12 months. In a year where DG Christine Owen has focussed on raising awareness of Domestic Violence, sourcing seven new mattresses seemed to be a good practical way of supporting vulnerable women in our community. With the help of the new Rotary (RDG 4) Community leader Russell Grove, we sought assistance from other Rotary Groups on the Coast and nearby. We sincerely thank the Rotary Clubs of Umina, West Gosford, Kincumber, Woy Woy and West Pennant Hills & Cherrybrook. Each of these five clubs donated $500. So along with our $1,500, this enabled us to reach our target of supplying the seven mattresses along with Sheet sets and Doona Cover sets, which were delivered in June 2024. While Allawah House is likely to close down as a women’s shelter in 2025, these ladies and their mattresses will be rehoused on the Central Coast. We would like to thank 'Just Mattresses' at Bateau Bay for giving us a great deal on the mattresses purchased and organising the delivery. |
The Rotary Club of West Pennant Hills and Cherrybrook is assisting the Kenthurst Club with grounds maintenance at the Transitional Community houses for older women.
It was wonderful to receive the following testimonial from one of the tenants.
"This program literally saved my life and has given us an opportunity to get back on my feet. When I found myself facing a housing crisis, this program gave me hope and a chance at a safe new beginning for me and my children.
The teams have been incredible, my family is safe and sheltered and we look forward to a bright and secure future. The teams that help look after us are professional and have helped every step along the way. They have never made me feel ashamed as a low-income earner or single parent.
My property manager is quick to respond, and nothing has been too much trouble.
Our case manager is incredible, my kids are safe and happy, and we feel genuinely cared about in this program. We are so lucky to be in a country that supports programs like this."

Dear fellow Rotarians,
It gives me great pleasure to personally invite you to our 2025 District Conference to be held at the Pullman, Penrith, on 21 and 22 March 2025.
Our conferences have always been a one-of-a-kind expo on humanitarian work with high quality speakers - a great way to share stories of the good work of Rotary, and to make and renew friendships with fellow Rotarians.
As global humanitarian needs reach record levels, our Rotary community is looking for ways to widen our reach and deliver more to those in need locally and globally. Accordingly, our 2025 District Conference has been themed as our first ever Sustainability and Humanitarian Summit for “A Better World through people & Rotary”.
Some highlights of our Sustainability & Humanitarian Sumit:
Watch this space for more details of these new elements, the overall program and keynote speakers. The team and I will keep you updated of major developments over the coming months.
I appeal to you for your support in registering, in inviting your friends, and in starting to think about how your club can use the airtime on stage to share the best of what you do every day for your communities locally and globally.

Some highlights of our Sustainability & Humanitarian Sumit:
- It will bring together all Rotarians from our District as well as appeal to people from the broader community who want to make a difference – so they can hear Rotary’s stories and opportunities for humanitarian service.
- We will have a series of short presentations by clubs (in-person or pre-recorded) that showcase their signature projects and the impact they have had.
- To generate ideas and new ways to solve humanitarian and sustainability problems, the Summit will host a competition for university/TAFE/high school students to channel their creativity and develop social impact projects that could be scaled up by interested clubs.

What it takes to be a Rotarian
There are members of the community who may have some misunderstandings about what it takes to be a Rotarian.
We are always looking for new members and, in fact, it is new people joining that keeps us alive as a Service club. From time to time I hear people say things that make me think they don't consider joining or even visiting Rotary for all the wrong reasons.
This article is about the things you don't need to join Rotary, and the things you do, just in case you are not sure. The other thing you should know is that we are a very friendly bunch of men and women and we have a lot of fun, as well as achieving some pretty good things in the community.
