Granada - Hurricane Beryl. Lucy's Story

An excerpt from ShelterBox Australia Newsletter October 2024

Picture
It’s my little house. My little house... I love it.’ Lucy, 65 years old, stands in front of her ShelterBox tent.
Born in Petite Martinque, 65 years old Lucy lives on Carriacou with her stepdaughter, two sons, daughter-in-law and grandson. Before Hurricane Beryl, Lucy worked as a repair seamstress and a full-time carer for her disabled son. When the hurricane hit, Lucy was unable to go to one of the community shelters during the hurricane, as the busy crowds would cause her son further distress. 'I just wish to God if any hurricane is to come again, we have a stronger place to hide from it… I didn’t want to go to the shelter, because of how [my son] behaves, I wouldn’t be able to take it. I wouldn’t be able to control him. So, most of the time I am at home, and I don’t go anywhere. So, we must stay home, you know, to keep him calm… to keep him calm.'

On the day of the storm, the weather was deceptively quiet. 'Outside in the morning, it didn’t look like a hurricane was coming. I got up early in the morning and I cooked… The morning was nice, the sun was bright, and then after some time the wind started brewing.' Many people hid in their bathrooms during the storm, as the walls are usually made from stronger materials. 'It was not easy because the bathroom was vibrating… You could hear the force of the wind going. I was just praying to God for the time to go… I was just praying and watching the time. We stayed in the bathroom until everything was over. When we came out, everything had disappeared around us.'
Picture
In the aftermath of hurricane Beryl, despite the large amount of damage to her home, Lucy focuses on how fortunate they are. 'This is the first time this type of devastation has happened to us, and we are small. You understand, we are small. If we didn’t have a good heart and take it all on, we would not make it… But we must give God thanks and praise, because there are other people in other places that are going through worse than us. We are alive. Where there is life, there is hope. We will be back, and we will be back stronger. We just need the help.'

Many people across Petite Martinique and Carriacou reported that Beryl was one of the worst hurricanes they had ever encountered. Lucy shares, 'Well, this is the worst I have experienced. Storm Ivan wasn’t like that; Ivan was a child to this one. This one was the great gran compared. I just wish I could see all the buildings with their roofs back. To make the island look more like it did before. I don’t like driving and seeing the disaster areas. When I drive and see all the places hit bad, it hurts my heart. It’s not a nice sight.'

Lucy and her family received a ShelterBox tent, along with a mosquito net, a kitchen set and a solar light. 'I got the tent, which I love, so bad. I love it, I love it, love it, love it. I got this tent, plus everything inside a bag. The mosquito net, the light – especially the light. The light is wonderful.

Visiting Lucy in her ShelterBox tent, you can see her passion for creativity and how she has made her shelter personal to her. 'Well, I decorated, I put up decoration because I love my decorations…. I just made it comfortable for me. Everybody comes round, and they love it because their tent wouldn’t be like mine. They don’t have what I have to make it nice for me.... It feels like I’m in the house. And how I’ve made it means I don’t miss my room. It’s my little house. (laughs) My little house, I love it.'

Pitch for Purpose
Rotary District 9685 Innovation Challenge for School Students

Picture
I am delighted to launch our Pitch for Purpose innovation challenge - an exciting opportunity for school students to hone their skills in innovation and design thinking while solving real-world problems related to environmental protection—one of Rotary's core focus areas.

For students, the challenge provides a real-world learning experience that is aligned to curriculum and based on skills of the future. We are inviting cohorts from primary as well as high schools.

For schools, this is an opportunity to empower students and integrate practical learning into the curriculum.

For Rotary clubs, this is an exciting new program from Rotary to take to your local school, offer them the benefits outlined above, and generate support from your local community to participate in our District Conference. Rotary – no more a best-kept secret!

For the price of sponsoring a school team, let’s get your local school community to experience the power of Rotary at this challenge in February and at the District Conference in March. Schools that make it to the Finals at the conference will require club sponsorship of $450 which supports a team of 5 plus one adult guardian for each student to attend the conference on Saturday 22nd of March.

But hurry, we need schools to register interest by 22nd of November so that we can tailor details like venue and timing to suit them. The preliminary round will be held in early February, followed by the Final at the conference in March.

Greetings All

*** EXCITING NEWS ***

Coming up on Wednesday 20 November, we are having a special 'The Magic of Rotary Gala' Dinner at Rydges, Norwest, a celebration of Rotary and the incredible difference we make together across the globe. On this special evening, we will come together to honour the profound work of the Rotary Foundation.

As we celebrate the accomplishments of the Rotary Foundation, the Gala will also highlight the “Magic" that happens when Rotarians unite—turning dreams into reality for those in need.

Our distinguished guest speaker is Ms Noémie Fox - 2024 Paris Olympic Gold Medalist. She will be interviewed by Sydney Morning Herald sports journalist Tom Decent.

The evening will have a magical atmosphere filled with inspiring stories, entertainment, gourmet dining, and camaraderie.

Be a part of the magic. Together, we can continue to make lasting change in the world.

This is a joint initiative of the Rotary Clubs of Castle Hill, Norwest Sunrise and Kenthurst as well as Rotary District 9685.

A personal invitation to District 9685 Conference 2025
A Sustainability and Humanitarian Summit
March 21 and 22 in Penrith

Picture
Picture
Dear fellow Rotarians,

It gives me great pleasure to personally invite you to our 2025 District Conference to be held at the Pullman, Penrith, on 21 and 22 March 2025.

Our conferences have always been a one-of-a-kind expo on humanitarian work with high quality speakers - a great way to share stories of the good work of Rotary, and to make and renew friendships with fellow Rotarians.

As global humanitarian needs reach record levels, our Rotary community is looking for ways to widen our reach and deliver more to those in need locally and globally. Accordingly, our 2025 District Conference has been themed as our first ever Sustainability and Humanitarian Summit for “A Better World through people & Rotary”.

Some highlights of our Sustainability & Humanitarian Sumit:
  • It will bring together all Rotarians from our District as well as appeal to people from the broader community who want to make a difference – so they can hear Rotary’s stories and opportunities for humanitarian service.
  • We will have a series of short presentations by clubs (in-person or pre-recorded) that showcase their signature projects and the impact they have had.
  • To generate ideas and new ways to solve humanitarian and sustainability problems, the Summit will host a competition for university/TAFE/high school students to channel their creativity and develop social impact projects that could be scaled up by interested clubs.
The Summit presents us with a pivotal opportunity to reenergise how we solve community problems, while also growing membership and boosting our public image.

Watch this space for more details of these new elements, the overall program and keynote speakers. The team and I will keep you updated of major developments over the coming months.

I appeal to you for your support in registering, in inviting your friends, and in starting to think about how your club can use the airtime on stage to share the best of what you do every day for your communities locally and globally.

You can register through this link - https://ourbetterworld2025.wordpress.com/

Join me and together we can make ‘A Better World through people and Rotary’!

What it takes to be a Rotarian

There are members of the community who may have some misunderstandings about what it takes to be a Rotarian.
We are always looking for new members and, in fact, it is new people joining that keeps us alive as a Service club.  From time to time I hear people say things that make me think they don't consider joining or even visiting Rotary for all the wrong reasons.
This article is about the things you don't need to join Rotary, and the things you do, just in case you are not sure.  The other thing you should know is that we are a very friendly bunch of men and women and we have a lot of fun, as well as achieving some pretty good things in the community.

Must have:
