MHERv Team Thank You

To the members of the Rotary Club of West Pennant Hills

I am writing on behalf of the ‘mherv’ Team to say a very sincere BIG THANK YOU to your Club members for the amazing response to our call out for help with raising funds “to keep mherv on the road”.  This will enable us to continue sending mherv to approximately 100 communities each year.  Our statistics show that by the end of this year, we will have tested more than 20,000 people and potentially saved over 630 lives since 2017 when the van first set out to offer free health checks.

Please pass on our congratulations to your Club members for the wonderful job they did.

I have attached 2 Certificates of Appreciation: -
Picture
The first one is for your Club, to express the gratitude of the ‘mherv’ Team for your financial help and your willingness to host regular ‘free health check visits’ from ‘mherv’.

Picture
The second one is for the Bunnings Store where you held the “mherv Awareness BBQ”.  Please print it and present it to the Store Management.  Presentation in a frame would be appropriate if you wish to do this.  A photo of you making the presentation to Bunnings Management / Staff could then be added to your Facebook page or website to highlight your Club’s role in bringing the free health checks to your local community and this will assist in spreading the word even further.

Team leader Adrian would like to add some news about next year….

"Building on our ‘first-time’ success, we have been turning our thoughts to next year.  We currently need around $130,000 per year to keep mherv on the road, and the big BBQ this year has been a great help. Susanne has done a mighty job in coordinating not only ‘mherv’s’ progress on the road, but also in managing the details to get the best we could from the first Bunnings BBQ opportunity.
So to ease Susanne’s workload, Rotarian Julie Butel has volunteered to take on the coordination of next year's BBQ event.  Julie is a much loved and respected member of Warners Bay Club; her attention to detail and professional style will help clubs get the best from ‘mherv’s’ monster Bunnings BBQ’ in 2025.
So, expect to hear from Julie in coming months … her first message will include the new dates, and her contact details".

Once again, THANK YOU from the mherv team.

Pitch for Purpose
Rotary District 9685 Innovation Challenge for School Students

Picture
I am delighted to launch our Pitch for Purpose innovation challenge - an exciting opportunity for school students to hone their skills in innovation and design thinking while solving real-world problems related to environmental protection—one of Rotary's core focus areas.

For students, the challenge provides a real-world learning experience that is aligned to curriculum and based on skills of the future. We are inviting cohorts from primary as well as high schools.

For schools, this is an opportunity to empower students and integrate practical learning into the curriculum.

For Rotary clubs, this is an exciting new program from Rotary to take to your local school, offer them the benefits outlined above, and generate support from your local community to participate in our District Conference. Rotary – no more a best-kept secret!

For the price of sponsoring a school team, let’s get your local school community to experience the power of Rotary at this challenge in February and at the District Conference in March. Schools that make it to the Finals at the conference will require club sponsorship of $450 which supports a team of 5 plus one adult guardian for each student to attend the conference on Saturday 22nd of March.

But hurry, we need schools to register interest by 22nd of November so that we can tailor details like venue and timing to suit them. The preliminary round will be held in early February, followed by the Final at the conference in March.

Important Rotary Safety & Security Notice

Dear Keith,

As raised in Clubs News e-newsletter earlier this Rotary year, fraudulent attacks continue to rise across all areas of government service, business, and community service organisations.

Please be aware that Rotary Club and District officials will never ask you to purchase gift cards via email or text, especially in an unexpected or secret request with instructions not to call and verify.

If you are unsure of any such requests by email or text, call the Rotarian directly to verify and/or contact your Club leadership.

If you don't have their details already in your phone, you can find contact numbers for our members via the District Directory on our website www.rotarydistrict9685.org.au (select "Member Login" at the top right of the page for your ClubRunner credentials, then click on "District" and select "District Directory 2024-25"). When the Directory is updated with new information and to resolve errors, notice will be provided at the top of the District News e-newsletter.

Please also take extra care to verify any bank transfer details, donation requests, and other transactions.

If you notice that an email has come from a slightly incorrect version of an email address with an extra letter or punctuation, report that address as spam in your email system. Please do not forward on emails with suspicious links to others. You can also report these to www.scamwatch.gov.au

This is an issue affecting many areas of our communities, especially coming into the busy holiday season. Please look after yourselves, and don't hesitate to contact your Club or District leadership if you have any concerns.

Yours in Rotary,

Niranjan Deodhar

Cluster 5: The Rotary Clubs of the North Shore & Beaches - UPDATE

Dear District 9685 Presidents

I am dropping a quick note to you to share how Cluster 5 are working together this weekend.

We have come together to partner with Hornsby Relay For Life and are underpinning the critical piece of event equipment: the Lap Tracker.

HRFL lost their Lap Tracker sponsor this year and were at a loss as to what to do.  The Rotary Clubs of the North Shore & Beaches stepped up each donating $250 toward the event and ensuring that the Rotary Clubs of the North Shore & Beaches Lap Tracker will be up and running in 2024.

We are also hosting a BBQ.  Come up to Rofe Park, Hornsby Heights on Saturday and check out this fabulous event.
Join us: https://signup.com/go/aYwpORk - please share the link - we would love to see as many Rotarians as possible.

This event takes in the suburbs from the Bridge to the Beaches to Brooklyn.  It is a huge catchment area.  $100,000.00 is raised every year and with over 50 teams participating, it was a sight to behold.

I take this opportunity to thank our Coordinator - Ruth Vumbaca and the Presidents and President Elects of the Rotary Clubs of Balgowlah, Berowra, Belrose, Hornsby District, Brookvale, Ku-ring-gai, Dee Why, Warringah, St Ives, Manly, Turramurra, Upper Northern Beaches and Wahroonga.

Working together for community.
Kind regards
Sallianne McClelland

Amid global challenges where access to clean water is of critical concern, Dr Martin Butson from Wollongong explains his innovative solution to disinfect water using the SAFE sticker system. A personal invitation to District 9685 Conference 2025
A Sustainability and Humanitarian Summit
March 21 and 22 in Penrith

Picture
Picture
Dear fellow Rotarians,

It gives me great pleasure to personally invite you to our 2025 District Conference to be held at the Pullman, Penrith, on 21 and 22 March 2025.

Our conferences have always been a one-of-a-kind expo on humanitarian work with high quality speakers - a great way to share stories of the good work of Rotary, and to make and renew friendships with fellow Rotarians.

As global humanitarian needs reach record levels, our Rotary community is looking for ways to widen our reach and deliver more to those in need locally and globally. Accordingly, our 2025 District Conference has been themed as our first ever Sustainability and Humanitarian Summit for “A Better World through people & Rotary”.

Some highlights of our Sustainability & Humanitarian Sumit:
  • It will bring together all Rotarians from our District as well as appeal to people from the broader community who want to make a difference – so they can hear Rotary’s stories and opportunities for humanitarian service.
  • We will have a series of short presentations by clubs (in-person or pre-recorded) that showcase their signature projects and the impact they have had.
  • To generate ideas and new ways to solve humanitarian and sustainability problems, the Summit will host a competition for university/TAFE/high school students to channel their creativity and develop social impact projects that could be scaled up by interested clubs.
The Summit presents us with a pivotal opportunity to reenergise how we solve community problems, while also growing membership and boosting our public image.

Watch this space for more details of these new elements, the overall program and keynote speakers. The team and I will keep you updated of major developments over the coming months.

I appeal to you for your support in registering, in inviting your friends, and in starting to think about how your club can use the airtime on stage to share the best of what you do every day for your communities locally and globally.

You can register through this link - https://ourbetterworld2025.wordpress.com/

Join me and together we can make ‘A Better World through people and Rotary’!

What it takes to be a Rotarian

There are members of the community who may have some misunderstandings about what it takes to be a Rotarian.
We are always looking for new members and, in fact, it is new people joining that keeps us alive as a Service club.  From time to time I hear people say things that make me think they don't consider joining or even visiting Rotary for all the wrong reasons.
This article is about the things you don't need to join Rotary, and the things you do, just in case you are not sure.  The other thing you should know is that we are a very friendly bunch of men and women and we have a lot of fun, as well as achieving some pretty good things in the community.
Picture
Don't need:
  • to be invited
  • to be of a certain age
  • to be male
  • to be a business person
  • to be retired
  • to attend meetings every week
  • to be available on weekends.

Must have:
  • a sense of humour
  • a willingness to give back to your community
  • a willingness to pitch in when required
  • some time available to help out on the occasional weekend event
  • an interest in the life of the West Pennant Hills and Cherrybrook communities
  • a desire to contribute in some way to the running of the Club.

If you would like to come along as a guest to see what it is all about just call either: -
Carol Russell (0418 431 157) or President Colin (0408 810 463)
