Presidents Report
There aren’t too many nights where I’m leaving home at 9.30pm to catch a train, but that’s exactly what I, and three other Club members did last Monday night after our weekly meeting. Colin and Anne, David and I jumped on the metro at Cherrybrook station as part of the district’s annual ‘End Polio’ train ride which is timed to take place on World Polio Day (Monday 24 October 2022). This epic train journey started at 7am and finished at 10pm, saw all 189 stations on the Sydney metropolitan network covered in one day and around $70,000 raised for this worthy cause. Also, on board at the time of our journey were organisers Mark and Dave from the Rotary Club of Beecroft, Past District Governor Lindsay, visiting international Rotarian Stephen and Hills District Rotaractor Shauna. Whilst on board we handed our Club’s donation of $1,000 USD (which converts to $1540 AUSD). So, something different for a Monday night, but a fantastic initiative and one that our Club is pleased and proud to support.
Coming up this Sunday is another event the Club has great interest in, that being the Black Dog Institute’s fundraising event at Metcalfe Park in Pyrmont. Our Club has been invited to run the BBQ as part of ‘One Foot Forward 2022’. The event is a fundraising walk around Metcalfe Park and surrounding boardwalks to raise money for the Black Dog Institute. Attendees can choose between doing one lap or two laps of the course. One Foot Forward enables conversations about mental health and encourages people to seek help. A key feature of the event will be to promote the importance of exercise in mental health and therefore the event will incorporate some wellness activities in the expo precinct such as yoga and meditation. While the organisers were happy for our Club to keep the proceeds we make on the day, Board decided to donate these funds back to the Institute because supporting the Black Dog Institute aligns closely with our commitment to supporting vulnerabilities in the community. So, while the participants will be ‘walking for a mentally healthier world’, our Club will be ‘cooking for a mentally healthier world’ and I’m sure having a lot of fun and comradery in the process. The planning and organising for this event are well in hand thanks to Tony C, Adrian, Douglas, Colin S and the crew they have organised. For those attending please remember your Club shirts, caps and aprons, and make contact for car-pooling arrangements.
We have a great meeting planned for next Monday 31 October as this will be a partners and Melbourne Cup night. We will also be inducting in Sue M as a new member and recognising Colin M as an Honorary member – so a wonderful celebration. I look forward to seeing you then.
And that’s the buzz for the week. Stay safe and travel well. Janelle

Guest Speaker: Dr Riles Moynes (Ted Talk) “The Four Stages of Retirement”
Tony Makin connected us to a most interesting TED talk:
Dr Moynes described the four phases of retirement and how to “squeeze the juice” out of retirement
In summary the four stages are:
1.Vacation Phase:
You do what you want, no routine
Its what most people long for, but it usually only lasts for one year and then it loses its lustre…. “is that all there is to retirement???”
2.Feel loss and feel lost phase:
Then most people feel the loss of routine, loss of identity, loss of relationships, no sense of purpose and for some a loss of power.
Some people face divorce, depression, decline, fear, anxiety, and depression
3.Trial and error phase:
Then we start asking “How can I make my life meaningful again”
This is when we try different things looking for meaning and satisfaction in our life.
It’s a trial-and-error process until you find the satisfying breakthrough in your retirement life and if you don’t succeed then you revert to phase 2
4.Reinvent and revision phase:
This is when you find your purpose, a meaningful existence and for many its when service to others becomes a key part of our life.
According to Dr Moynes, this is when we “squeeze ALL the juice” out of retirement
Closing remarks by President Janelle:
President Janelle thanked all for attending and reminded all that next Monday is a face-to-face meeting at Springfield and our annual Melbourne Cup meeting that welcomes members and partners, and wear your Melbourne Cup attire.
It will also be the meeting where Sue Moore will be inducted as a new member and when retiring member Colin McGowan will be recognised as an Honorary member – so a great night of celebration and fellowship- please join.
