Presidents Report
When I wrote my President’s report last week I was returning from Coonabarabran where we’d been visiting to formalise the Sister Relationship between our Club and the Rotary Club of Coonabarabran. I explained this relationship started in 2018 during the extreme drought conditions affecting regional NSW. Driving back last Tuesday it wasn’t drought that was on our minds however, but rather floods in the central west of NSW; we thought about this even more as we drove through water that was across the roads in and around Dundedoo. In this past week, the issue of floods has continued to occupy the news, with reports of thousands of people being evacuated, homes and shops being inundated, crops and livestock being lost and roads and towns being cut off.
Rotary have been quick to act here with several initiatives being established, some of which our Club has become involved with. RAWCS is responding to the flood crisis by maintaining their National Flood Appeal through the Rotary Australia Relief Fund (RARF) and by opening RABS projects specific to each Flood affected areas. Funds raised to date have been directed through local Rotary Clubs to providing $500 Rotary Vouchers to those whose homes are uninhabitable and providing temporary accommodation. Support is also available to Rotary Clubs ‘on the ground’ for their projects for their communities.
At the District 9685 level, an initiative has been created to collect non-perishable food and household supplies for distribution to flood affected communities in the Cowra region. Our Club has committed to this and last night I took home around 7 bags/boxes of these requested items that were donated by Club members and partners, and which will be passed onto the Rotary Club of Pennant Hills who are coordinating this food drive. If you’d like to donate it’s not too late, as we will be accepting donations next Sunday when we are at the RFS precinct cleaning up prior to the Christmas Market the following weekend. To extend our flood relief efforts to the local community, the Club will be operating collection points outside Woolworths Cherrybrook and West Pennant Hills (Coonara) on Friday 25 November between 9am-3pm seeking donations of food and supplies from local shoppers – a big thank you to those who have volunteered to help here. In addition, Board have agreed to bolster our efforts by donating some of the funds raised at the upcoming Christmas Market to the Flood Appeal. And just finally if anyone would like to donate individually, the following RAWCS projects have been established to channel funds to specific flood affected regions:

Night Report
Sgt Max opened meeting and called on all present to observe a one-minute silence in honour of Charter Member and Past president Howard Fleming who passed away recently.
He then called on Carol Russell to give the Toast to Rotary and our Club.
President Janelle welcomed all present including Honorary member Pat Baseley, Past President Barry and partners.
Janelle spoke about the Coonabarabran follow up and presented to the club a certificate, banner and present from them.
Janelle also spoke about assistance to the flood relief activities she has arrange for a trolley to be placed outside Woolworths at Cherrybrook Shopping Centre for the public to donate. She asked for volunteers to man trolley. She is also endeavouring to make similar arrangement with Woolworths at Coonara Shopping Centre.
Director Reports:
Colin Sharpe (Community Service) advised that the tree of joy is going well at present. It is planned to hold a working bee to wrap presents on 12th December at 4:30pm
More online sales are being finalized as part of the garage sale at the moment.
Keith Ball (Media) advised that he is in process of revamping the bulletin and make it more “user friendly”
Carol Russell (Membership) Advised that she is following up two potential new members.
Neville Hansen (Club Service) advised that the calendar is prepared up to the end of year. Please advise him if you are going to be away at any time.
Next week’s meeting need to advise if coming or apology. Need to bring a present to the value of $15.00 for Kris Cringle.

Rosemary Clarke gave a presentation of the club’s involvement in Youth Programs:
RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards)
Course held in January involving guest speakers, team building, interesting “situations” self-reflection
and social interactions. We were to send 2 ladies in 2021 but program was cancelled due to Covid.
RYPEN (Rotary Program of Enrichment) This is held in February for students going in year 10 next year who just need a push to gain confidence and leadership skills. Details should be released soon.
Donations to local Schools. The club donated $200.00 each to WPH Public School, Cherrybrook Public School and CTHS for end of year prizes usually for Citizenship or Leadership.
NYFS (National Youth Science Forum) a highly sought after course and is very competitive for science students entering year 12. We were not successful this year in sponsoring anyone.
The Science Experience. This year the club collaborated with Coonabarabran Club and sponsored 3 students to attend the program at Macquarie University. The Davidson and Sharpe families hosted them. A video was shown of an interview President Janelle had with them on a recent visit to our sister club.
RYE (Rotary Youth Exchange) a program eagerly loved by the club. Since charted in 1987 the club sponsored 24 inbound students to 15 different countries and 20 outbound to 12 different counties. Our last inbound was Larissa Marcossi from Brazil in 2017/18 and last outbound Katherine Louey to Austria 2020/21 when her time was cut short and returned home due to covid.
A video was shown from the students perspective of the program. Rita Tchetchenian spoke of her experience as a hosting parent and Jenelle spoke of her experience as a parent when her daughter went to Switzerland in 2015/16
Hoping that the program will run again in 2024.

LOAN APPLICATION.
Rebuilding New Orleans after Katrina often caused residents to be
challenged to prove home titles back hundreds of years. That is
because of community history stretching back over two centuries
during which houses were passed along through generations of family,
sometimes making it quite difficult to establish a paper trail of
ownership.
A New Orleans lawyer sought a FHA rebuilding loan for a client. He was
told the loan would be granted upon submission of satisfactory proof
of ownership of the parcel of property, as it was being offered as
collateral.
It took the lawyer 3 months, but he was able to prove title to the
property dating back to 1803. After sending the information to the
FHA, he received the following reply.
(Actual reply from FHA)
"Upon review of your letter adjoining your client's loan application,
we note that the request is supported by an Abstract of Title. While
we compliment the able manner in which you have prepared and
presented the application, we must point out that you have only
cleared title to the proposed collateral property back to 1803. Before
final approval can be accorded, it will be necessary to clear the
title back to its origin.”
And here is the great letter the lawyer responded with:

"Your letter regarding title in Case No.189156 has been received. I
note that you wish to have proof of title extended further than the
206 years already covered in the present application.
I was unaware that any educated person in this country, particularly
those working with real property, would not know that Louisiana was
purchased by the United States from France in 1803, the year of
origin of title identified in our application.
For the edification of uninformed FHA bureaucrats, the title to the
land prior to U.S. ownership was obtained from France, which had
acquired it by Right of Conquest from Spain. The land came into the
possession of Spain by Right of Discovery made in the year 1492 by a
sea captain named Christopher Columbus, who had been granted the
privilege of seeking a new route to India by the Spanish monarch,
Queen Isabella.
The good Queen Isabella, being a pious woman and almost as careful
about titles as the FHA, took the precaution of securing the blessing
of the Pope before she sold her jewels to finance Columbus's
expedition. Now the Pope, as I'm sure you may know, is the emissary of
Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and God, it is commonly accepted,
created this world.
Therefore, I believe it is safe to presume that God also made that
part of the world called Louisiana. God, therefore, would be the owner
of origin and His origins date back to before the beginning of time,
the world as we know it, and the FHA.
I hope you find God's original claim to be satisfactory. Now, may we
have our damn reconstruction loan?

Two little boys stole a big bag of oranges from a neighbour & decided to go to a quiet place to share the lot equally.
One of them suggested the nearby cemetery.
As they were jumping over the gate to enter the cemetery, two oranges🍊🍊 fell out of the big bag but they didn't bother to pick them since they had enough in the bag.

Let's face it - English is a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant, nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren't invented in England or French fries in France . Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat. We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.
And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn't the plural of booth, beeth? One goose, 2 geese. So one moose, 2 meese? One index, 2 indices? Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend? If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it?
If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat? Sometimes I think all the English speakers should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane. In what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital? Ship by truck and send cargo by ship? Have noses that run and feet that smell?
How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out and in which, an alarm goes off by going on.
English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race, which, of course, is not a race at all. That is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible.
PS. - Why doesn't 'Buick' rhyme with 'quick'?

And we use it to brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver; we warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen.
We lock UP the house and some guys fix UP the old car.
At other times the little word has real special meaning.
People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses.
To be dressed is one thing, but to be dressed UP is special .
A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP .
We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night.
We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP !
To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP , look the word UP in the dictionary.
In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4th of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions.
If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used.
It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP , you may wind UP with a hundred or more.
When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP .
When the sun comes out we say it is clearing UP .
When it rains, it wets the earth and often messes things UP .
When it doesn't rain for awhile, things dry UP .
