Presidents Night Report for Monday 17 March 2025
President’s introduction:
Welcome members, partners, and Claudine our guest speaker, Rudra and Bramara. Anne will introduce Claudine later.
If you have not heard the book sale was our best ever. Robyn will have more to say later. Someone complained to NSW SafeWork that the venue was unsafe, with trip hazards, inadequate maintenance of the premises. Also lack of toilets. SafeWork do not intend having an inspector follow up this instance, however they may visit in future. I have responded to SafeWork addressing the issues in case the person makes another complaint next year, or at another of our events. The SafeWork letter and my response has been sent to the Book Sale Committee for information and attention to the issues next year.
Thank you to the lawn mowers and line trimers who are looking forward to their next coffee on Anne next Wednesday. Anne will say more later.
Bendigo Bank offered Kaye $1500 to support a project or equipment as long as it costed, and the Club is contributing. It cannot be a retrospective one. Let me know if you have any ideas.
Fifteen are attending the District Conference dressed in what we hope will be a winning costume. You will see it at the next meeting at Hotel Pennant Hills on March 31. We will also have District Governor Elect Michelle Ellery present.
Meetings. We are endeavouring to get back to alternating face-to face and Zoom meetings.
Anne attended President Elect Training on March 8. Some changes happening that will affect clubs. A change that has already been implemented is around Working with Children. This is a change driven by NSW government and auditing of our events. Anne has the details if you want to know.
The Fit for Purpose Clubs in our coach Jane Moore’s group met last week. Five clubs present. We are all at about the same stage in our implementation plans. We are using the information gathered during the Club Health Survey and the second phase report to the Board by Rosemary to ensure the club is fit for the purpose of attracting younger members. Carol who is now leading this project and Keith will asking for 3-4 non-Board members to form a group to propose solutions to the issues raised. Keith will lead the group.
ANZAC day commemoration. We will again join West Pennant Hills and Cherrybrook Lions. You will have received an email from me. Details about how to book will be in the Bulletin
NorWest Sunrise Rotary events. Details will be in the Bulletin.

Extract from House Cleaning Made Easy
The old-fashioned idea of the necessity for a spring and fall housecleaning is becoming a thing of the past in most households, for which we, modern housewives should be truly grateful. By doing simple ‘housecleaning often and the heavier work a little at a time, you save both yourself and belongings. The first thing to consider in keeping the house clean is to keep dirt from getting into the house by keeping walks steps, porches and sills, together with shoes and rubbers as clean as possible; and when the dust is removed it should be removed thoroughly. Right methods mean remove of dirt — not merely scattering it about to settle again. Another thing which will be of inestimable value in lighting the burdens of housecleaning, is to train the family to put things they use where they belong, and good condition. This is only fair play to all. |
Many housewives use water and cleaning agents too lavishly in cleaning woodwork and furniture. This not only injures the wood and finishes, but weakens glue, paste and cement. Many good cleaning agents are sold in boxes under trade names. They are convenient and usually in handy sized boxes. A pure mild white soap is preferable to the stronger varieties containing alkali, which usually injures finishes. A little kerosene added to your cleaning water will help to cut the grease and thus free the dirt. Borax and ammonia are wonderful aids in house-cleaning, to cut grease and soften the water. One tablespoon of borax or two tablespoons of ammonia in a gallon of water is sufficient.
Different kinds of scourers are suitable for different kinds of cleaning. Whiting is , especially adapted to fine surfaces. It should be mixed with water for aluminium, kerosene for enamelled iron and porcelain and with ammonia for silver, Bathbrick is coarser and more suited for iron, zinc and steel. This should be applied with a little water or if the surface to be cleaned is very soiled, a little kerosene may be added. Steelwool is used for the removal al stains and discolorations from hard metal or wood surfaces. A fine grade of wool should be used for this purpose.
Your cleaning tools should be in repair and ready before the cleaning proper starts, but before buying any new equipment ask yourself a few questions. Will it make some disagreeable task more pleasant? Will it really pay for itself in the long run by wear and tear lessened or by time and strength saved?
All woodwork should be dusted frequently. If all or spots and finger marks around door handles, window latches, etc: are ‘cleaned frequently with a dampened cloth it
