President's Report
Hi all,
We had our International Night on Monday and had some 55 people attend from right across the district plus a number of new people who came to have a look at Rotary which was fantastic. Peter gave us an update and overview on the Global Grant Project in Floes Indonesia. The object is to build 70 toilets and 70 water tanks. Janelle and Andrew presented on their trip to Flores, Indonesia in October 2023. Peter also promoted the donor’s trip to Flores, Indonesia again this year in October 2024 and if anyone is interested then please contact Peter. Thanks you Peter, Janelle, and Andrew.

Updates from past week:
- Iisa is now back from New Zealand and now off on the District Safari so we will not see her until the beginning of March. I am sure they are enjoying themselves. Thank you to Anne and Colin for taking Iisa to New Zealand.
- Visioning: I have circulated the visioning data to everyone and will talk to these documents on Monday 4 March. The Board ratified the Club’s Vision statement on 14 Feb to be:
The Club is built on a strong sense of community spirit, fun and friendship and sees actively engaged members focusing on making a difference in communities and to those less fortunate than ourselves. - The Board has agreed to donate $1,000 to RAWCS for the North Queensland Floods.
- Janelle and I had the pleasure of talking to Sue and Michael on Tuesday night. We talked to them at 5am their time before they went to the Gym. Lovely to catchup.
- We have our Annual Giant Book Sale coming up on 8, 9, 10th March at Cherrybrook Uniting Church, and had our second Book Sort on Saturday 2nd Mar at the Church. Thank you to all who volunteered to date and everyone on the House Drop Off and Phone roster.
- No Penno High School Carnival this year. Now every second year. The Team is now doing Downtown Markets and they will be the third Sunday of the month from 9am-3pm, launching March 17th at Wollundry Park, Pennant Hills. They have offered us a spot at half price. Selling space for $25 a square metre. Declined, as would rather continue with Bunnings BBQs.
- We have now locked in for Changeover for Friday 21 June at Springfield as does not clash with Penno High Carnival.
- Relocation of shipping containers from Galston. Hills Shire Council are not interested helping us in any way. Trying to get a meeting with Hornsby Council.
- International Student Commitment. Please remember this is a commitment by the Club. We all need to get involved and help the Host families. If you are going somewhere pls ask the Host Family if you can take Iisa. Multiple benefits, Good for you, good for Iisa, respite for the Host family
- Rotary Leadership Institute Courses (RLI): RLI is a training course offered to Rotarians to develop their skills in leadership and management within Clubs to improve performance, knowledge and enjoyment in leading or helping to lead Clubs in the District. Carol has now attending the course on 23-24-25 Feb 2024, and the next course after this is on 17-18-19 May 2024. Run via Zoom and starts on Friday night. Full details in the District Newsletter.
- District Conference – The District 9685 Conference is on Friday, Sat 15-16 March at Terrigal and the theme is “Good Vibrations - Beach Party”. Friday is now full but there is plenty of availability on the Saturday Plenary Sessions for $120. It is always a very good event so would be good to see more people attending. We have 16 people attending to date.
- Regionalisation: Applications are now open for two exciting new roles being introduced to Zone 8: the Rotary Specialist and Regional Council Portfolio Committee Member. Everyone should have received an email on this. Nominations close Thurs 29 Feb. Please have a read.
- Regionalisation: District 9685 was allocated 5 (five) Regional Community Groups (RCGs) that in general fitted quite well with our existing clusters. The first RCG meeting will be on Thursday 7th March and Colin S and myself will be attending. The first meeting is a meet and greet and discussing a leader for the Group.
- Hands and Feet – Remember before Christmas we gave non-perishable food for Cherrybrook Uniting Church’s Hands and Feet program. Hands and Feet are in desperate need of Volunteer drivers. If you would like to help, then pls contact me.
That’s it for the week so Let’s look after each other, stay safe and let’s do it.
Remember to check “What’s On” for what’s on. Yours in Rotary Neville Hansen |

At the Railway Station ... contributed by Cawas
A woman at the railway station waiting for her train spots an 'I speak your weight' machine. She just as to have a go...Standing on the scale she inserts a 50p piece...the machine makes a whirring sound then a voice emanates from within the scale and says "You are 13 stone three pounds, go to the end of the platform and break wind"! Puzzled, walks to the end of the platform and carries out the machines instruction. She returns to her original spot on the platform and wonders what that was all about. Fumbling through her purse produces another fifty pence and again inserts the coin in the scale...The machine whirrs again and says, "You are 11 stones exactly, go to the end of...."Before the machine utters another word, she's off to the end of the platform and breaks wind...runs back to the machine and shoves her last fifty p in the machine...again the whirring sounds starts and she eagerly awaits the voice..."Oh dear" says the machine, "you are now nine stone six but with all this farting about ...you've missed your train"!
Butcher, Baker, Candlestick maker ... contributed by Cawas
It was many years ago since the embarrassing day when a young woman, with a baby in her arms, entered his butcher shop and confronted him with the news that the baby was his and asked what was he going to do about it?
Finally he offered to provide her with free meat until the boy was 16. She agreed.
He had been counting the years off on his calender, and one day the teenager who had been collecting the meat each week, came into the shop and said, "I'll be 16 tomorrow."
"I know," said the butcher with a smile, "I've been counting too, tell your mother, when you take this parcel of meat home, that it is the last free meat she'll get, and watch the expression on her face."
When the boy arrived home he told his mother. The woman nodded and said, "Son, go back to the butcher and tell him I have also had free bread, free milk, and free groceries for the last 16 years and watch the expression on HIS face!
